Music is an experience that we often relegate to an imaginary realm beyond words. Our vocabulary fails us, reviewers rely on metaphors, music critics resort to the extremes of praise and condemnation, and how often has your friend said, “I can’t describe their sound…you just have to hear them…”? The fact that we want to remain silent about music is worth talking about in itself.

Talking, writing, and reading about music are necessary acts if for no other reason than the unfortunate reality that at some point, every piece of music ends. Putting some of my musical experiences into words, I hope, will elicit a face-to-face confrontation with the problem of musical criticism. And exploring this problem will, I also hope, make me a better musician, a better listener, and a better critic.
